2020 Financial Literacy Workbook
FREE Teachers Resource – Financial Literacy Workbook
We want our youth to have a sustainable financial lifestyle where they live a financially secure life that can sustain themselves from school to retirement. They need to be able to live a life that can weather any financial storms along the way and it takes planning and foresight to do this. We know that this workbook has opened up a Pandora’s box of other topics that are life relevant for the students. They are leaning skills needed to live a secure financial lifestyle.
This workbook came about from difficulties we faced when young people came through our doors to apply to refinance a multitude of personal debts. It was plain to see that some had no basic financial understanding and were getting themselves into “hot water” and were certainly not heading towards a secure financial lifestyle.
We discussed our observations with the Maleny State High School Principal who agreed that this was an issue. After further discussions with Nev Dance, Head of Maths Department at the school, the workbook found its feet. So in early 2015 the credit union produced the original workbook that was over 100 pages and had 22 units which was being taught every Wednesday at Maleny State High school to year 10s. In late 2015 the workbook was expanded to include another 5 relevant topics that the school thought important and in 2019 was updated again with current information.
Last week we handed the FLW to Sue Krucker, Youth Support Co-ordinator for Maleny Flexi School and Maleny High School for the student to use. Great to see local schools taking advantage of this free teachers resource. Tamborine Mount High School also took delivery of it last week. Along with Beerwah State High School and STEMM at Burnside High School the program is expanding and students are getting the financial literacy education they need.

This is a free teacher’s resource we offer to the school, with no outlay for them.
We have been nominated for this award by the Maleny Chamber of Commerce for the Sunshine Coast Business Awards, 2 years running and are extremely proud that our community recognises the importance of this free teachers resource workbook.
We teach our children to love, respect and be kind to others but not many of us then go on to teach them about financial literacy and that is sometimes a result of adults themselves not having the experience or knowledge to impart to their children.
Nev Dance, Head of Maths Department, Maleny State High School says “The workbook is getting good feedback from teachers and the kids are liking it as well. It has bought some to life and some are even coming back either the same day or the next week asking further questions, so it’s getting the kids thinking. One student even told me that before they hated maths but now it’s one of their favourite subjects. The lessons open a Pandora’s box of other topics that kids will freely ask about and it is the right age to be talking about this stuff”
