Maleny Neighbourhood Centre need our help

Over the last two Christmases our members have been more than generous placing presents under our Christmas tree to hand to MNC so that the less fortunate in our community have got some sort of Christmas cheer. Christmas is over but the need is still there and so we hope you can help. In branch we are now raising funds to purchase fuel vouchers and street swags. Next time you are in ask the tellers how you can contribute.

Maleny is wonderful town, a rich connected community of creative people with interesting professions, however there is another side to Maleny that is not visible, a side that is the business of Maleny Neighbourhood Centre (MNC). Here is an account from a family MNC is currently working to assist:
“I am a mother with 2 children who suffer from Cerebral Palsy and respiratory problems. We moved back to Maleny in August 2014, and had a lease on a home until August 2015. When we first moved in I struggled with stretching my money to cover bond, rent in advance and moving cost. Maleny Neighbourhood Centre helped the family out with food and blankets which meant so much to us all. They also put us in contact with departments that could help us with furniture, dental care and counselling support. In the 8 months here I have had to get assistance from the centre on several occasions for food, and I am always greeted with a caring smiling helpful face. I have made friends with some of the staff and it is a help just to have those people to chat to when feeling down. We are now homeless and are continuously applying through Real Estates. The children going to Maleny Primary and Maleny High School and they enjoy their schools and we all would love to stay in the area. We are paying a very high rent per night for a caravan park accommodation which is difficult financially but this is our only option available to stay in the area.”

Many services that are available on the coast such as Centrelink, Dental Clinics and Housing Refuges are not available in Maleny, making it very important for those in dire need to be able to access a $20 petrol voucher. MNC has accessed a number of street swags made by Woodford Correctional Centre. MNC gave out 10 swags in 2014, they are portable and provide protection and warmth for those sleeping rough.

MNC provides an average of 100 people with emergency food a month at a cost of around $1500, this rose to $1750 during April 2015. MNC is the heart of Maleny, fosters community health and helps Maleny to be a thriving friendly town with a healthy economy. MNC reduces social problems, builds community connections and works to combat trauma, hardship and crime. A non-judgemental day refuge for everyone, MNC works to help people in crisis, finding a way back to a good life after an emergency.

If you would like to support MNC further you can by making a monthly donation. They would be grateful for any amount. A $20 monthly donation is only 66 cents per day and fully tax deductible (with an invoice emailed to you each May for your tax returns).
