STEMM awarded MCU Charitable Trust Grant

The money granted will make a difference in the lives of young mothers and their babies from STEMM (Supporting Teenagers with Education, Mothering and Mentoring). This is a program which supports pregnant and parenting young women re-engage in education.  To provide better futures for themselves and their children.

They are using the money to finance their ‘Health & Well-being Program’.  It focuses on preparing nutritious budget meals which are suitable for the whole family. To do this they would provide lunch for their students one day a week.  Mothers and expectant mothers would take turns in cooking and preparing a meal for the group with a staff member of a volunteer. The mother would be modelled a healthy and nutritious meal which is budget friendly and suitable to reproduce at home.

The benefits of rolling out a ‘Health & Well-being Program’ with nutritious meal preparation and are therapy sessions are twofold. By educating the mother, she will be able to provide nutritious meals for her family. Knowledge and skills imparted by the mother to her child could prevent childhood obesity and modelling good eating habits. It provides an opportunity to manage a budget and for the development of good relationships between the mother, staff and volunteers from the local community.
